Headteacher Foreword
It has been a remarkably busy term, filled with exciting events both within and beyond the classroom, as well as a recent visit from Ofsted. I am not permitted to say much about it, but the two-day inspection went well and showed that we had not wavered from our mission; providing the best possible education for our students, in a safe and nurturing environment where every student is encouraged and supported to meet and exceed their individual potential. The hard work over the last eighteen months was recognised, and I shall share the report when I receive it in the New Year.
As you will see from the latest newsletter, our students have been actively engaged in a variety of enriching activities, fostering a vibrant school community. This week, we had the privilege of celebrating the achievements of our senior students, both past and present, at the Senior Prize Giving ceremony at St Denys’ Church. It was a heartening occasion to witness their outstanding academic and extra-curricular endeavours being recognised and applauded. Their dedication and hard work serve as an inspiration to us all.
To round off the term, we held our annual carol service also at St Denys’ Church, filled with the enchanting melody of Christmas carols and music, and the warmth of the community. The festive spirit filled the church, creating an atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of the holiday season.
As we approach the end of this term and the start of a new year, I'm filled with gratitude for the extraordinary contributions of our students, staff, and parents. Their unwavering commitment, passion, and support have made this year one to remember.
I wish you all a joyous and peaceful Christmas season, full of love, laughter, and cherished moments.N M Law

Carre's Grammar School Student Awarded Prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship
Students Harry Dickens and Jay Rutter were amongst almost 320 UK students who have been honoured by one of the UK’s leading engineering programmes.
Of the 320 Arkwright Engineering Scholarships awarded so far, 37% were presented to female students and 54% to young people from state schools. Overall, 1391 hard-working students applied to the 2023 programme, with 622 reaching the final interview stage. The Smallpeice Trust is working hard to break down the barriers and misconceptions preventing young people, particularly girls and students from under-represented groups, from engaging with engineering, by providing them with the confidence, skills, and real-world learning to thrive in STEM.
The scholarship comprises a competitive selection process from an online application, to the aptitude exam, culminating in a virtual interview. This comprehensive programme ensures to assess each students’ engineering knowledge, and key life skills, including leadership and creative thinking.
All successful scholars are awarded a nationally recognised Scholarship certification to enhance their university and apprenticeship applications, alongside a £600 financial bonus to support their studies. Schools of successful scholars receive a £400 donation per awarded scholar at their school, which they can utilise for STEM events and resources to benefit students.
"We are thrilled to announce the results of our 2022/23 Arkwright Engineering Scholarships. We are very proud of all the students who applied and congratulate all those who have been successfully awarded an engineering scholarship. The UK engineering industry is always seeking the support of new and inquisitive minds which - through exciting opportunities like Arkwright Engineering Scholarships and The Smallpeice Trust - can shape the future of the exciting world of engineering. Our scholarships continue to help give young people equal access to industry experiences and gain a real insight into what it takes to be an innovative engineer."
We're very proud of both of you.

Year 11 students recently enjoyed a visit to watch A Christmas Carol at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.
The professional production, by Box Clever Theatre Company, used innovative lighting, sound and staging to create a truly interactive version of the novel which was both faithful to the original story yet contemporary enough to engage today's teens.
Students were actually part of the Christmas Party that the Ghost of Christmas Past took Scrooge to, dancing along with him to the Macarena and one of our (very tall!) Year 11's had the fun of playing the part of Tiny Tim!
After the production, students were able to participate in a workshop on atmosphere and setting. There were lots of very willing (and sometimes surprising!) volunteers to don the costumes and take on a new persona.
Who knew we had so many budding Thespians in Year 11!

Elevate Education - Year 11 students had the opportunity to attend workshops to help with exam preparation and skills:
EFFECTIVE WORK
Students were introduced to the different types of work they can do in preparation for exams and which are the most effective, so that they could walk out of the seminar with an understanding of precisely what work they should be doing and when.
FIXING MISTAKES
Students were shown how to identify areas of knowledge deficit and what they might be doing wrong in prior exams, assessments and practice papers, and how to ensure these mistakes are not repeated when it counts.
ALLOCATION OF TIME
Students were taken through a step-by-step process to ensure preparation is completed weeks in advance.
EXAM ROOM TECHNIQUES
Students were shown exam preparation strategies including stress management, planning, time allocation and how to tailor a succinct, focused answer.
The Elevate programme worked with small groups of students (around 30) and provided practical and high impact workshops designed to help students make the best of their potential, as well as providing follow-up resources which will be delivered by form tutors to reiterate and integrate the key messages and strategic learning given.

Year 7 Cookery at Kesteven and Sleaford High School
|
|
The Year 7 students have learnt many new skills during their cookery sessions, some of which are listed below, which they will hopefully develop and build on as they continue to help out at home and perhaps cook.
I feel the students now appreciate how heavy shopping can be, as they carried their own ingredients down to KSHS.
The claw and bridge knife grips - please ask them to demonstrate these at home.
Oxidation of fruit and how to prevent this.
How to cook and cool pasta and make a cold pasta dish, which they should now feel confident making for dinners or even pack ups. They learnt how to identify when pasta is cooked by texture and sight.
How to bake scones; how to bring the mixture together, so it wasn't too sticky; and why we glaze the scones.
This recipe, in part, was re-visited for the pizza base, which students completed with no recap and worked independently to make and assemble their own pizzas. These cost-effective pizzas can be filling and simple for students to create at home.
Students learnt about boiling water, simmering pasta, as well as how to operate an oven safely.
Hopefully, the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and that they shared some of their creations at home.
Well done to everyone, especially Mr Scholefield and the team of helpers from Carre's and KSHS.

Project X
Luke, Ethan, Noah and Sammy, all from 8.2, participated in the final of Project X at RAF Waddington against seven other schools.
In five weeks they had to design and build an aircraft that would fly down a pully and release two eggs at specific points, either side of a ‘mountain’. Other factors within the brief included that the aircraft must land safely and be able to fly again.
When it came to the time for their runs, the eggs didn’t deploy, but the bomb bays ejected at the perfect time, and we all thought that the aircraft had the smoothest ride and stop out of all the aircraft there. There was another aircraft that had to have an emergency pillow at the end of the runway!
The students worked really hard on the aircraft and the presentation they had to give to four RAF personnel in a Dragon’s Den style, that focused on team work, sustainability, design and testing. It was a little scary, but they did admirably and presented as a team.
They had a wonderful, educational day out with the STEM Lego challenges, drone flying, paper plane flying and learning about body armour and survival, in addition to the aircraft flying and egg drops.
Luke, Ethan, Noah and Sammy did the school proud with their attitude, conduct and their can-do approach to the whole day - well done.

Students from Year 11 attended the Awards Ceremony and Open Day at Military Preparation College for Training, Lincoln recently.
This event was a noteworthy showcase of the accomplishments of their learners, who have been working diligently on their programmes. Throughout the day, the learners demonstrated their proficiency in various aspects, including drill and fitness, showcasing their dedication and hard work, which is part of a 3-month career stepping stone before moving to Harrogate.
Ex-Carrensian Finlay Drayton was a part of the team delivering the presentation and explained later how it had been of significant value to him in moving his career forward, and he will be heading to Harrogate in March 2024.
Students had the opportunity to mingle and ask questions about the Level 2 and Level 3 programmes which can also help them in preparation for Officer entry routes.

Competition at Warhammer World, Nottingham
We began our adventure by driving to Warhammer World in Lenton, Nottingham – with Mr Baker, having been there three times before and only getting the team lost once…
We arrived and met with our competition for the day – each player had three matches ahead of them.
James, Aaron and John emerged undefeated on the day, only separated by battle points to determine their overall ranking.
James won the tournament with his Aeldari army, winning three tough battles and receiving the most bonus points for his tactical approach and sportsmanship throughout the event.
John and Aaron came joint third, whilst both were undefeated – the matches for the most part, especially for Aaron, were quite one-sided, with his knight often going through matches without taking any damage, fun to watch but not to be against!
Throughout the day we were able to look around the exhibitions at Warhammer World, some of which took up nearly the size of a classroom! Even Mr Scholefield enjoyed looking around and getting into the tournament.
John won the Spirit of the Alliance Award. Throughout the tournament, John helped his opponents with rules, strategies and such – including helping a relatively new player at her first tournament with tactics and taking the time to ensure that the match played was enjoyable for both, impressing staff from other schools with his positive attitude and detailed explanations.
Samuel won the best Painted Army Award with his Necron Army being selected by the tournament organisers as having the most detailed paintwork.
All winners received prizes in the form of Warhammer models, equipment etc... No giant trophy for the cabinet this time, but we will keep competing in future tournaments until we have one!
Well done everyone - Mr Baker, Head of Computer Science

Joshua Dunbar, an ex-Carrensian, visited school recently to talk to Year 9 students about his journey to working with The Rigby Foundation.
Joshua started off studying medicine and transferred to forensic science. His interest in ballistics introduced him to The Rigby Foundation, where he is now training in bespoke handcrafted rifles.
Josh also gave a talk to the Year 13 product design students before running a small workshop talk with Year 10 and 11 engineers focusing on the hand-made tools to use when crafting the bespoke riffles.
Thank you, Joshua, for coming back to speak to our current students.

Mrs Karumazondo recently saw ex-student Jamie Chatterton make his West End debut in a new musical 'The Little Big Things'. It was fantastic and what an amazing achievement for him. If you get a chance to go, it's well worth it.
Jamie went out to see Mrs Karumazondo and her family after the show. He loves every minute of it but only gets two days off at Christmas. That's show business!
He also closed the Royal Variety Performance recently with the rest of the cast, so he's on a roll.
Well done Jamie!

If your son/daughter cycles to school:
Please ensure they lock their bike to the metal bars in the cycle compound.
The main gate to the compound is locked during the day but not overnight.
If your son/daughter leaves their bike overnight, it could be stolen.
Students need to let the office know if they are leaving their bike overnight, so arrangements can be made for it to be stored somewhere more secure.
Thank you.

Notices
Please remember to label all PE kit and school property - as we have a large collection of unnamed and unclaimed water bottles, lunch boxes, shoes, trousers, coats and PE kit.
If your son/daughter has lost any of these items, please ask them to come to the office to look through the lost property boxes.
We hold a lost property amnesty at the end of every term. Any unnamed and/or unclaimed items following the amnesty will be donated to charity, put into our 'pre-loved' shop, or thrown away.
Sickness/medical absence can be notified to the school office by telephone call 01529 302181 (we have an answer machine for outside office hours), the MCAS App, or via email: enquiries@carres.uk.
Please do not send voice text messages to our landline as these are often jumbled and not clear.
If your son/daughter is poorly/injured during the school day, they should come to the school office for assessment/treatment. Office staff will then make the decision to contact parents and arrange for collection. Students should not call home if they feel poorly.
A polite reminder that the front car park should not be used to drop students off in the morning or at the end of the school day. This is for safety reasons due to the number of students and staff arriving/leaving the site.
If your son/daughter needs to be collected during the day for an appointment/is injured or poorly, you are welcome to use the front car park.
Thank you for helping to keep our site safe for everyone.
Road Safety
Please reiterate to your son/daughter the need to stop at the kerb and check for vehicles before crossing the road, not to be on a mobile phone whilst crossing and to be aware of members of the public when using the pavements/marketplace and other areas.
Thank you
