Welcome to the first newsletter of the academic year. I am delighted to be able to share with you some of the many wonderful things that have happened at our school in recent weeks.
Firstly, big congratulations to all of our students who received their GCSE and A-level results. We are incredibly proud of your hard work and dedication, and we are confident that you will go on to achieve great things.
We are also pleased to share with you some photos from our Junior Prizegiving ceremony in July and Work Experience programme. It was wonderful to see so many students being celebrated for their achievements, and to hear about the positive experiences they had during their work placements.
We are committed to educating our students about important social issues. Recently, five students visited Sleaford Police Station for a knife crime pilot event. This was a valuable opportunity for our students to learn about the dangers of knife crime and to understand the impact that it can have on individuals and communities.
Some of our students recently attended a construction event at the Lincolnshire Show Ground to learn more about a career in construction. There were a variety of activities and workshops available, and students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from local construction companies.
We hope that you enjoy reading this newsletter and that you are inspired by the many successes of our students. We look forward to sharing more news with you in the future.
Please visit the school website to learn more about upcoming events as well as sign-up to the school's social media pages.

Message from Sleafordian Coaches
Due to issues with identifying who should or should not be travelling on our contracts and service, we are, with Lincolnshire County Council approval, moving to a system from Monday 30 October which will mean that if a child attempts to board one of our vehicles without a valid bus pass they will be refused (they may, on a service route, pay the appropriate fare so that they can travel).
We would advise all parents to check their child has their bus pass, and if they do not either contact Lincolnshire County Council to arrange a replacement, or for SLE routes, contact us at Sleafordian Coaches directly.

Junior Prizegiving July 2023
Well done to all our Junior Prize Winners
A-Level Results Day - August 2023
GCSE Results Day - August 2023
Students at Carre’s Grammar School celebrated as a third of all students achieved the top three grades in five subjects.
Overall, the pass rate for the 121 students at the Sleaford school was 96.7 per cent - with 29 per cent of all grades achieving the top scores of 7,8 and 9.
In addition, 93 per cent of students achieved a grade of 4 and above in both English and Maths.
Headteacher Nick Law welcomed “another very successful year” and said he was “proud of the achievements of the students”.
“We are delighted that the efforts of our students, staff and the support of parents have been rewarded by such good results,” he said.
"At Carre’s we are very much focused on the individual results of each of our boys, setting high targets to raise aspiration for all, and pride ourselves on teaching beyond the exam requirements at GCSE, while also enabling them to engage in a very busy programme of enrichment activities.
“This will see Carre’s students moving on to the next level, be it to do A-levels, BTEC diplomas, scholarships, college courses, apprenticeships or employment, and this is cause for celebration.
“Some individuals have overcome considerable challenges to achieve their results, and I am very proud of each and every one of them. The results are a testament to the hard work and motivation of the students, alongside support from their teachers and parents.”

Well done to all the students who sat exams - Good luck for the future
Year 12 Work Experience - July 2023
"From my point of view, they were all absolutely superb, giving their all and being great ambassadors for their respective schools. They bonded well as a group and you could see them growing individually and as a team over the course of the week – it was great to see: by the end of the week the team work displayed in the OASC hangar challenges and in the group discussions was fantastic".

Year 12 Work Experience - July 2023 - Positive Comments
Firstly, we just wanted to say it has been a pleasure having Oscar with us this week.
He has integrated well into the team and shown an impressive set of skills for someone of his age.
We have shown him a range of areas we are involved in, he has worked well on his own and as a team, and he has had a chance to sit with the Director of the company too.
We hope Oscar has enjoyed his week here as much as we have enjoyed having him here.
Kind regards

Recently, James Northcote-Wright helped a Year 7 student from Kesteven and Sleaford High School who was travelling to school on the same bus as him, when she became unwell. He cleaned her up (with his hay fever and nosebleed tissue supply), her bag, blazer and the bus floor and disposed of the rubbish.
He also messaged this student's brother, so he could inform their parents. Another KSHS student also assisted.
The student is also a member of the same Scout group and her father told the Scout Leader how helpful James had been.
Obviously, James' parents are very proud of the way he conducted himself, and that they are raising a caring young man.
He also helped a fellow pupil on a bus trip to Alton Towers who had a nose bleed.
We might have a future medic on our hands!
Thank you to Mrs Northcote-Wright for sharing this with us.

Construction Event at Lincolnshire Showground
In September, a small number of Year 10 and 11 students went on a construction trip to Lincolnshire Showground.
There were a variety of companies at the event including National Grid and Anglian Water. National Grid showed us various positions in the company, such as linesman. They also showed most of the equipment they use. The linesman’s boots had metal spikes protruding from the side for climbing up the wooden poles. All their equipment was electrically insulated, so they were safe from being shocked.
Anglican Water had us building a Lego-like house out of foam bricks from a technical drawing. We had to use a lot of teamwork, and we managed to come first. They then showed us and explained about their new project of transporting water from the north to the south due to water shortages in the near future.
We also had an opportunity to paint. We were given a board and some painting tape, and we then had to mark an X on the board. We had to choose some paint to have first and paint it in one quadrant of the X; then, we patterned it with a cloth and rolled it lightly on the paint. We then painted it again on the other side with a different colour, and we used a sponge to dab it. We repeated this process with various colours.
It was a very interesting day, and we all learnt a lot about various companies and their infrastructure.

We’ve transformed our range of experiences to better help young people grow their strengths, develop skills for life and work, have fun, and mix with new people.
Away from home experiences
This summer saw the first of our new-look away from home experiences, with 16 and 17-year-olds spending five days immersed in activities centred around the themes of either employability, independent living, or social action. We’d like to thank you for supporting NCS and our partner Ingeus in promoting these experiences to your Year 11 and 12 students.
There will be many away from home experiences taking place in the coming weeks and months, including during half-term. To learn more about what’s happening in your area please email the Ingeus Education Engagement Team at NCSEET@ingeus.co.uk
Local community experiences
The next few months will see the launch of our local community experiences, where young people can engage with transformational social action projects in their communities. These experiences are being delivered by a network of nearly 100 local organisations, some of whom will be getting in touch with you to discuss how their experiences can benefit your students. The full list of partner organisations can be found here.
Online experiences
NCS online experiences will be available soon, with a range of innovative activities that boost young people’s independence, resilience, and employability skills. Until the online experiences launch, we’ve created a range of interactive articles to help students learn more about budgeting, employability skills, volunteering, and more. These can be accessed here: https://wearencs.com/online-experiences
Excitingly, students don’t have to choose between doing an away from home experience or doing experiences online or in their local community, but can take part in all of them!
As always, do get in touch with us at education@ncstrust.org.uk if you have any questions, comments, or ideas.
Thank you.

Notices
Please remember to label all PE kit and school property - as we have a large collection of unnamed and unclaimed water bottles, lunch boxes, shoes, trousers, coats and PE kit.
If your son/daughter has lost any of these items, please ask them to come to the office to look through the lost property boxes.
Sickness/medical absence can be notified to the school office by telephone call 01529 302181 (we have an answer machine for outside office hours), the MCAS App, or via email: enquiries@carres.uk
If your son/daughter is poorly/injured during the school day, they should come to the school office for assessment/treatment. Office staff will then make the decision to contact parents and arrange for collection. Students should not call home if they feel poorly.
A polite reminder that the front car park should not be used to drop students off in the morning or at the end of the school day. This is for safety reasons due to the number of students and staff arriving/leaving the site.
If your son/daughter needs to be collected during the day for an appointment/is injured or poorly, you are welcome to use the front car park.
Thank you for helping to keep our site safe for everyone.
Road Safety
We have received a number of telephone calls from concerned and shaken members of the public about the behaviour/road sense of students before and after school. One student recently came very close to being in collision with a car.
Please reiterate to your son/daughter the need to stop at the kerb and check for vehicles before crossing, not be on a mobile phone whilst crossing the road and be aware of members of the public when using the pavements/market place and other areas.
Thank you
A selection of items from the lost property amnesty before the summer holidays - all unnamed.
Music Lessons
If your son/daughter has music tuition during the school day, please ask them to check the timing of their lesson, which is displayed on the timetables near the music practice rooms.
Tuition time will be missed if a tutor has to collect a student from a school lesson.
Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
A message from our IT Department
To improve Cyber Security, and reduce the risk of account impersonation, we are taking further steps to secure our ICT systems. We are introducing Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) on all student accounts (MFA has already been enabled for staff and governor accounts).
Many of you will already use MFA to secure your online banking, online retail, and social media accounts. We believe the introduction of MFA will encourage good practice by our students as they appreciate increasing online threats.
Be assured that MFA isn’t being implemented in response to any specific previous or existing cyber threat, and the school continues to invest in appropriate security solutions to protect all members of our community.
All students accessing their accounts from home, or on a mobile device, should have set up their MFA by the end of September 2023. The preferred method is to use the Microsoft Authenticator app on a mobile device; however, a telephone number can be used if preferred.
Full guidance can be found on the Students > Remote Access section of the school website, or directly by accessing the Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) (Student) help guide. The help guide also explains how students can set up Self Service Password Reset (SSPR). SSPR allows students to reset and change their ICT account passwords themselves from home, and outside of school opening hours.
Lydia, Alex, Hannah and Danny (Senior Sixth Form students) welcomed stutdents/parents/carers to Sleaford Joint Sixth Form information evening, held across all three school sites.

Alumni
My name's Oscar Hewitt and I attended Carre's Grammar School between 2012-2019.
Recently I graduated from the BA Film Making course at the London Film Academy in Fulham. During this course, I met some incredibly talented collaborators, and together we formed the film production company 'Jacco Macacco Films'.
Last summer we travelled to Lincolnshire to shoot our debut film 'A Van Called Muriel' in Grantham and the surrounding area. The film was achieved with the help of fellow Carre's alumni Travis Cullum, who stars in the film, with Max Beckett and Sam Rooke as our sound recordists.
A year on, we finally released the film to the public at two cinema screenings. One was in London on Sunday 3 September and the other was in Grantham on Thursday 7 September.
I would love to see some of the faces of the staff that supported me with my aspirations throughout secondary school, and it would be a joy to be able to show the film also to students who may be interested in film making as a career path. But equally, all staff, students, and their families are more welcome to come to the screening to enjoy a film and to help support a young, local film production company.
The trailer is available on YouTube: A Van Called Muriel/Official Trailer
You may have seen that I recently launched The Big Ambition, a new campaign to hear directly from children, young people, and parents across the country about what they need to make their lives better.
I want to thank all the schools that have already participated and to the thousands of children that have had their say. I am keen to build momentum on this and so would appreciate it if you could encourage your school to take part in The Big Ambition, if you have not done so already.
As we approach the General Election, now is a crucial moment to take children and young people’s voices to policymakers, Government, and decision makers, to make sure they are heard.
That is why I want to hear from every child and young person in England about their schools, communities, family life, and the wider world. I will also be asking what they want for their future, their hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
This survey is for all children and young people aged 6-18 and for parents/carers who can complete the survey on behalf of children aged 0-5. This will ensure we hear from early years settings. Adults can also assist children who are unable to complete the survey independently.
Here is what students can expect to take away from our workshop:
Nature Connection: Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the sounds of the forest, and rekindle connection with the wildlife.
Whittling and Woodcraft: Learn the ancient art of whittling. We'll provide the necessary tools and materials, and students will have the chance to create their own wooden creation.
Wellbeing Benefits: Studies have shown that spending time in nature and engaging in creative activities like whittling can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve overall mental well-being. This workshop is an opportunity to experience these benefits first-hand.
How to register:
To secure a spot in this workshop, please use the QR codes provided on our poster to book a place through Eventbrite.
If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact Elizabeth Disdel at ldisdel@lincstrust.co.uk.
It was great to see so many parents and students at the recent information evening, where we took the opportunity to revisit revision techniques and strategies as well as thinking about the coming months.
