Headteacher Foreword
Trips, visits and extracurricular activities have long been a feature of the school and it is good to see them back now after hiatus during the pandemic. Today, a group of students have headed to New York, another group are heading out to Austria on the ski trip over half term. In this newsletter, you’ll be able to read about a whole host of other activities that have gone on in the last few weeks, and these are in addition to those that happen on a weekly basis in school. These activities greatly enrich the experience of the students’ time at the school and add to their personal development, so I hope that as many students as possible will avail themselves of the opportunities on offer, be it sport, music, art, Warhammer, chess, dungeons and dragons, puzzle club, computer club…to name but a few of the things that are on offer during every week.
You will be aware that we had a monitoring visit from Ofsted this week. They were able to see many of the good things about the school and the progress that the school has made since their last visit. Ofsted will be writing to the school within the next few weeks, and I will share their findings. As a result of their visit the Fitness Suite is no longer open during the day to members of the public, which is a shame as this is an important element of our community engagement, but is necessary to ensure the safeguarding of the students. Plans are already in place to improve site security, and this will see fencing and gates around the site at Easter.
I hope that whatever your plans are, that you enjoy the break and that students come back refreshed ready for the next term.

On 17 January, the Year 7 students took part in a Taiko drumming workshop with Dave Mitchell from ‘Louder than Life’.
Students learnt to adopt the mindset of a Japanese Warrior, harnessing their inner tiger and learning to be still like water!
They all learnt a sequence of rhythms to be performed on the Taiko drums, along with some Japanese commands.
It was a very enjoyable workshop and the students all achieved a fantastic performance at the end of their session.

Swap Shop
The first ‘Old Carrensians’ Swap Shop’ was opened as a reward for students in the top 75% of each year group for positive points. If given a bronze, silver or gold voucher, students were able to swap it for a prize.
Students in all year groups have really enjoyed their prizes from the Old Carrensians’ Swap Shop this week. It has created a real buzz around school!
Students had requested a range of prizes, including stationery, card games, chess boards and balls they could play with at break. Around school there were plenty of games of Uno, table tennis and Rubik's Cube competitions to be seen once the Swap Shop had closed.
A big thank you to The Old Carrensians’ for sponsoring the Swap Shop. The students are already looking forward to the next one!

GCSE Science Live!
Report by Daniel Bentley 10B
50 x Year 10 and 11 GCSE students recently travelled to Cambridge for GCSE Live! After a lengthy 2 hour + bus trip, we finally arrived at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, after accompanying Mr Fisher through the town with countless upper class comedy jokes.
First we were greeted with a lecture on the topic ‘Gene Eating’ where Professor Giles Yeo presented the idea of how our genes can affect obesity in different people. Throughout this, he discussed the powerful biological influence of food intake, for example someone would be more inclined to eat a slice of pizza, rather than broccoli.
The second lecture consisted of how the human brain functions, presented by Dr Hannah Critchlow. Focusing on brain waves, we learnt how different emotions/ reactions affect how much work the brain performs. For example how an electric shock alters your brain waves.
After a short break, we had another lecture, this time from Professor Alice Roberts who spoke on archaeology of skeletons. We learnt what skills are needed to identify who someone was thousands of years ago, truly showing human ancestry, and how a skeleton is preserved in peat bogs and many other ways.
Another break leads us into our fourth lecture, on the possibility of time travel. To our astonishment, he proved a theory of the possibility of travelling into the future through wormholes, all linked with physics. And yes, time travel is possible into the future, but possibly not into the past as we found out. Overall, most agreed this one truly was the most gripping lecture with how interesting Professor Jim Al Khalili presented his explanation.
Finally, we came to the lecture by Professor Andrea Sella, who asked us a question on how a zebra gets its stripes. He explained the question in terms of chemical reactions, proving all you need to have stripes was the right set of linked reactions and then ‘away you go transmitting signals and making patterns’. One experiment he demonstrated in front of us was greeted by intervals of clapping every 5 seconds when the solution changed colour, which lasted for quite a while.
That was the last lecture which took place during our Science Live trip, but there was more. After both breaks, a professional examiner gave us tips and tricks on how to excel throughout our GCSE exams, with many revision techniques.
All In all, the trip was truly an amazing opportunity for all students to see a different perspective of science, from professors with years of specialised research. Overall, it was extremely informative, and most of the topics had us all on the edge of our seat.
However, the greatest part in my opinion was my chance to ask questions to the professors. Being sat at the very back of the top balcony meant the questions had to be bellowed across the entire hall to everybody’s delight, my favourite being the one I asked Prof Jim Al Khalili ‘What would happen to you if you were in the middle of three black holes’, to which he replied: ‘You’d be sucked into one of them'.

Thomas has been completing at a National level in the cycling discipline Cyclocross under his local club banner Sleaford Wheelers. The season for CX has now finished, and we recently received the national standings.
In the 6 series Nation Cyclocross Trophy Series Thomas as a first year in the under fourteen category, finished the season ranked 53rd out of 114 competitors.
We travelled up to the National Championship event on 14th/15th of January in Lancaster where he had an awful gridding on the back row in 65th. The conditions resembled a wet Glastonbury, but Thomas used the skills learnt racing to finish in 43rd position after a challenging race on the same course the elite level riders completed on.
These results put him just outside the top ten in his age group as a first year at a national level.
It is a huge step up from a county/regional level to the national events and Thomas has learnt a lot this season. Some of the challenges included bike changes every lap due to conditions, courses including 47 steps to carry your bike up, riding off camber sections, vertical drops and mud.
He is looking forward to starting the national mountain bike and road racing series in late spring.
Report and photographs provided by Thomas' dad.
Well done Thomas!

Holocaust Memorial Day
On 26 January, the Year 10s watched a live stream about Holocaust Memorial Day, where we heard the story of one of the few surviving Holocaust survivors, Ruth Posner. She told us all about how she had to live many lives, as a young Jewish girl, then have to hide her identity and escape from being held captive. Her story was detailed and told us all about what happened to her and the Holocaust in general.
During this I felt sad about all the horrible things she witnessed, like being shot at many times, just as a child. She also had to leave her parents behind to escape with her Aunt, and she never heard about what happened to them, whether they were killed or whether they survived longer. We were also told about how she went on to become a successful performer when she arrived in England (not knowing a word of English at first), which showed her resilience to still make a good life for herself.
Overall, it was an eye-opening experience for us all, and we learnt much about Ruth Posner’s life and her experiences in the Holocaust.
Report by Will Simpson
My account of the story of Ruth Posner
In the 10 minutes before Ruth’s interview began I remember listening to the introduction of Ruth and a brief overview of her story, it was at this point I realised that I had a life-changing opportunity to listen to the story of one of the few remaining holocaust survivors.
Ruth was only a child when the war began, and she lived her life like any other child. Her family was Jewish and when the Germans invaded Poland, she was sent to a ghetto. She was forced to work in a factory; this completely shocked me as she was only a child when she was forced into labour. This was her first life, Ruth described her one life as many different lives. She described them as this because of the many changes she had to deal with.
Her second life involved her change to a Catholic to hide from the Nazis. This to me was very alien, even at such a young age as Ruth had to understand that she needed to change who she was and if she didn’t, she would be captured and potentially killed.
Her story continued on, and she lived many different lives in a short space of time. The war ended when Ruth was 16, and she came to England to complete her education. Following this, Ruth trained with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and she stayed with them for 18 years.
Ruth is a great role model to me as she demonstrates what anyone, at any age can do. Her courage enabled her to fulfil her life
