Headteacher Foreword
We are at the start of the exam season, for the first time in three years, and it feels as if the school is returning to something resembling a normal one. Year 11 and 13 students have already taken some of their external exams, Years 9 and 10 have done theirs, and for Years 7 and 8 these are to come next term. Trips and visits are being planned for students in the final term, we have the annual sports day at Boston, music events coming up and there is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to celebrate.
This term we have seen a changing of the guard as a new Senior Prefect Team has been appointed to serve for the next 12 months. The Head Boy is Angus, the Head Girl is Meera, and the Deputy Heads are Lucas, Joshua, Amelia, Sophie, with Edward and Zosia leading the Student Council.
Congratulations to all of them and I am sure that they will make a great team as they represent the school at public events, work with students across the town, fundraise, liaise with younger students and keep staff and governors apprised of student feeling. Congratulations to all students who put themselves forward for positions in the Senior Prefect Team. It was a very rigorous process, and they all performed admirably well, making us feel proud of them all; there will be many other opportunities to serve the school for these students.
Our new team will have big boots to fill! The retiring Senior Prefect Team, consisting of Head Boy Matthew, Head Girl Alexia with the Deputies, James, Kieran, Jessamy and Millie, along with the other members of their year group, have made a huge contribution to the life of the school.
They have been a great asset to the school as well as a credit to themselves and leave with our appreciation and admiration.
Mr Law

Parent Governor Vacancies
The Robert Carre Trust, of which Carre’s Grammar School is part, has recently undertaken a wide-ranging Governance Review, and we are delighted to say that as a result of the Board agreeing the plans and making various positive changes to current appointments on the Local Governing Bodies, which will be known as Local Governance Tiers, we have two Parent Governor vacancies with effect from 1 September.
We are starting the election process and nomination papers will be sent out to all parents shortly. More information will be available on the website or by contacting the Clerk: debbie.scott@robertcarretrust.uk
All parents of, or those with parental responsibilities for, students currently registered at CGS are eligible to be nominated and, if there are more candidates than vacancies, an election will be held

Review of Gangsta Granny by Tyler Hunt 7L
David Walliams is a world-renowned author - and trust me, this performance of a world-famous, gran-tastic book didn't go a-miss.
Gangsta Granny is on a sneaky tour around Britain, including Nottingham. Even the Daily Telegraph couldn't get enough of the show, saying, 'Kids love this show. Every comic opportunity is grasped'.
Ben dreads a Friday as it only consists of two things: cabbage and scrabble. One night Ben is looking for biscuits when he comes across something that will change his fearful Fridays forever! Can Ben do something nobody has ever done before without Mr Parker getting in their way?
Even with Covid, the actors still managed to make the performance interactive and fun. In my opinion Ben was by far the best, he certainly wasn't scared of speaking to a crowd, so much so, it was like having a conversation with him.
You should see this play; it will grip you by the neck of your shirt and pull you into a world of trouble! Every family (no matter how big or small) will have a time full of memories and laughter; tell your friends, colleagues, and a random person on the street to run to a theatre, grab some popcorn and enjoy this play.
While you're watching, hide all jewellery (and strap your socks on tight, you don't want them getting knocked of) unless, of course, you want Granny to bring out her gangsta!

Gangsta Granny Review – by Charlie Baldock 7L
Gangsta Granny is a play based on a book written by award-winning David Walliams and according to some reviews, it was a fun-filled, heart-warming show for over 5s. It is about an 11-year-old boy named Ben and his boring old granny. He hates every Friday when he has to visit his granny’s house because all they do is play Scrabble and eat cabbage soup. However, he finds out that his granny is hiding a huge secret…
The main characters are Ben, Granny, Mum, Dad, Mr Parker, The Queen, Raj and Flavio Flavioli. It is on tour with so many places to see it: Nottingham, Torquay, Blackpool, Chester, Exeter, Poole, Dartford, Oxford, Belfast, Barnstaple, Glasgow, Dublin, Darlington, London, Peterborough, Aylesbury and Plymouth.
All the actors gave a gran-tastic performance! Everyone will love this incredible play directed by Neil Foster, and one minute you will be crying with laughter, and the next it will have you swallowing a lump in your throat.
Check out Gangsta Granny tour dates for more details.
Year 7s went to see this show in March 2022.

Over the last few weeks, Key Stage 3 students have turned their focus to poetry and Mrs Tierney’s classes have been getting creative in taking existing texts and refashioning them to create their own new ‘found poems’.
Here are some crafty examples of what they have produced.
Well done to: Charlie Harris, Frankie Webb, Jack Counsell, Jayden Timmermans, Logan Badenhorst, Oliver Riley, Ryan O'Leary, William Swan-Dennis and Zachary Shaw

Carre's nominated Finn to attend the East Midlands Basketball Aspire Programme (effectively talent identification programme) in September. Since then, he’s progressed through a number of rounds and has progressed to the Central Region camp.
This is a huge accomplishment when you consider that he started playing the sport in Year 8 and the number of others that he’s competing with.
He’s also recently started playing under-18 national league basketball at aged 14.
Well done Finn - what a great achievement!

Grade 8 Guitar Exam
Brodie Murphy 11W recently passed his Grade 8 (the highest) guitar exam with Distinction.
It’s really difficult to achieve a distinction, so he’s done extremely well.
Fantastic achievement Brodie.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
On 16 May 2022 several Robert Carre Trust ex-students arrived at Buckingham Palace gardens to celebrate achieving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. A Gold DofE programme is a demanding, non-competitive personal challenge, open to all young people, which takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. Young people build their own programmes with activities in five sections – Physical, Skills, Volunteering, a five-day residential and a four-day expedition.
On a sunny morning in busy London, where preparations for the Jubilee celebrations were already evident, they were greeted by RAF Air Cadets with a programme of events detailing the guest speakers, times, and locations in the garden they would take place throughout the morning. International adventurers and explorers, business leaders and entrepreneurs spoke including explorer Ben Fogle, The Apprentice’s Tim Campbell and DofE alumna actress Nina Wadia and there were games and activities in the garden for all to enjoy.
Around 3,000 recipients attended the first of the special festival style celebration hosted by the Earl of Wessex (Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Award) the largest ever held. These events ran all week and in total 12,000 young people from around the UK received awards showing extraordinary resilience and determination to achieve their awards. The pandemic hit young people hard, affecting their education, social lives, jobs, and mental health. At a time when many lost structure and routine, DofE provided much needed motivation, focus and purpose. Supported by leaders, more than 330,000 young people worked towards their DofE awards during the first year of the pandemic and volunteered more than 1.8 million hours in their communities, often helping the Covid relief effort.
HRH The Earl of Wessex spoke from the main stage at 11am along with Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe and Award holder Felix Daglish (who told how DofE had transformed his approach to life, remembering it being his first taste of independence due to his disability). The students were given their Certificates and celebrated in the good British tradition with garden party tea served in Duke of Edinburgh cups along with a cupcake each.
I was privileged enough to receive an invitation to see them receiving their awards due to twenty students being invited. A huge number had been waiting for this invite and event following Covid and lockdowns. I managed to meet up with ten of them during the morning in the garden and have photographs taken with them and join in their long-awaited celebration. They all looked very different in their finery to the students I took through Gold in the Yorkshire Moors or Dales back in summer 2018 and 2019!
Huge congratulations to them all!

Carre’s Grammar School ‘Giant Orchestra’ Music Day - Tuesday 5 July
The ‘Giant Orchestra’ Music Day will take place at Carre’s Grammar School on Tuesday 5 July. Students will need to arrive at Carre’s for a 9.15am start (please liaise with your primary school as some may intend to bring their students together). The event will finish with a reception at 2.40pm and concert between 3 and 3.30pm to which you are all invited.
We hope that the day will be fun and inspirational for all of our instrumentalists; in previous years (pre- Covid) we had over 200 musicians who gave a fantastic performance at the end of the day. The event will enable your son/daughter to work with students from Carre’s and several other local primary and secondary schools, giving them a chance to meet other children with similar interests, who are working at a range of levels. During the day the students will be rehearsing in one huge orchestra. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a sport activity session. We will be working on four pieces of music. Two are from the BBC 10 Pieces project: ‘3rd Movement of Symphony No.1’ by Florence Price, and ‘Nimrod’ from Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’. We also have a really exciting collaboration with Lincolnshire Music Service for our other two pieces. These will be ‘Ibiza Classics’ style with a live DJ, and we will be performing Robert Miles’ ‘Children’ and Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’.
In the afternoon we will focus on rehearsing for the ‘Grand Finale’ concert with all students performing together. I hope that you will be able to join us for this performance. Refreshments for those wishing to attend the concert will be available in our school canteen from 2.40pm.
Students will be able to purchase a snack (fruit, biscuit and soft drink) at break time at a cost of £1.20, but could I please request that students bring packed lunches for the middle of the day. Students will also be able to engage in a sports activity for a mid-day break.
Please complete and return the online form or contact the school office, so that all the arrangements for the day can be put into place. We will liaise with your child’s school so that they know that they will be attending the day. Forms should be returned as soon as possible. Music for your child to learn and practice in advance of the day will be emailed to you before the end of May and will also be available for you to download through Lincolnshire Music Service’s website.
Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on 5 July.
Ruth Quinton
Head of Music

Members of staff have been taking part in art and craft sessions once a week after school. The first project was using paper mache to create a bowl. Below are some examples:
The next project was to create a pottery owl, during workshops run by Mrs Slesser, Chair of Governors. The owls were then fired by Mrs Slesser and brought back in for glazing. We await with anticipation to see the results of the firing process.

Information regarding the new Foundation Year programme that Cambridge University now offers for Arts and Humanities subjects. The programme co-ordinators noted that the East Midlands was one of the areas least represented in the 2021/22 admissions cycle although data suggests many students in the region may meet the eligibility markers, and as such they would love to reach more suitable applicants in our region ahead of the next admissions cycle.
Attached is a letter from the Foundation Year Co-ordinator Dr Alex Pryce, and some documents should you wish to contact them directly with any queries.
There are also dedicated webpages with many further details about this new programme.
As the first cohort will only start this autumn, I should note that all queries should be directed to the organisers rather than myself!

MyChildAtSchool App
Following the introduction of the Bromcom MIS system in school, parents have access to the MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) App.
We are encouraging parents to download this App as it gives you access to your child's timetable, attendance information, behavioural events, parental consent forms, the ability to update your personal details, view exam timetables (if appropriate), exam results and assessments.
Please contact the school office for an invitation code email.
Breakfast Club
Please ensure that your son/daughter has something to eat before school in the morning. There have been several incidents of students fainting/feeling very light-headed during morning lessons, who haven’t eaten anything that day.
The Breakfast Club runs every day in The Chill from 8am to 8.40am selling a variety of items including: bagels, cereal, yoghurts, toast and hot and cold drinks.
ParentPay - Cashless Catering
Please ensure your son/daughter has sufficient funds on their ParentPay account to pay for food/drinks purchased in The Chill.
What to do if your son/daughter feels unwell during the school day
If a student is feeling unwell or is injured, they must report to the medical room and not use a mobile phone to contact parents/carers to come and collect them. First aid will be administered accordingly or students will be monitored, and a decision made whether they are well enough to return to lessons or need to go home. Parents/carers will then be contacted by the office staff.
PE KIT/LOCKERS
A reminder to please label all PE kit and school clothing/property. We have red PE tops, shorts, school shoes, trainers, pencil cases, water bottles, jumpers, coats, trousers and ties – all unnamed - ready to be claimed
All students are allocated a locker in Year 7 which they can keep until the end of Year 11. Sometimes we have to collect in keys and reallocate lockers, depending on changes to Form Tutors etc. Students are then re-allocated a new locker and key.
Please encourage your son to use his locker to keep his PE kit/coat and other belongings in, as this helps to reduce the amount of lost property.
BORROWED ITEMS
Please return items of clothing that have been borrowed from the school office. They will be clearly labelled with a property of Carre’s Grammar School sticker. We have many items outstanding that need to be returned please, so we can lend them out to other students.
Mobile Phones
The Mobile Phone Policy can be found on the school website www.carres.uk-About-Policies.

Alumni - Oliver Garland (2013 - 2020)
Since having had my final year of Carre’s cut sadly short thanks to the pandemic, I was fortunate enough to have left with a great set of A-Level results – proof that mock exams really do matter!
It was exactly 15 minutes after Boris Johnson announced the cancelling of exams in March 2020, that I received the university offer that I had been waiting for, and I have since been fortunate enough to have moved to London where I am currently reading Architecture at Central Saint Martin’s. I am currently approaching the end of my second year and studying such an intense and demanding course in a city full of opportunity for distraction and procrastination is by no means easy, but incredibly rewarding - I was fortunate enough to have had my first-year design portfolio nominated for the North London RIBA Innovation award in 2021.
In July 2021, I was also fortunate to have been given the opportunity to collaborate with HENI Talks and ARTiculation and take part in a series of short films with the aim of encouraging engagement and encouragement of young voices in art. I participated in the ARTiculation Prize in 2019 whilst part of the Sixth Form, where I was placed 3rd at the National Final held at Cambridge.
I have additionally been approached by the National Gallery in London, as a result of my being an ARTiculation alumni, to respond to a series of artworks as part of an educational research project they carried out in June 2021.
A few months later I was also involved with giving a talk to some directors of the National Gallery in Singapore, although sadly only online and not in person, about my ARTiculation experience, as the prize itself is most excitingly expanding its reach globally.
My most recent exciting ventures include my bounding as a student as part of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects in January 2022, which sees my studentship of 6 years at the company, and my own mentor who is a well-established architect with her own practice, to gain insightful knowledge and experience in the industry, whilst allowing for vital networking in the architecture and property development industries through a series of practice visits, luncheons, and quarterly banquets throughout the calendar.
Furthermore, I have also become a member of The Georgian Group which is based here in London; an architectural heritage society that advocates for the protection of Georgian buildings at risk of demolition, as well as attending extra-curricular lectures, social evenings, and house visits. The likes of several of my personal favourite architects and practices are also closely involved with the Georgian Group, which I hope will be advantageous for me when applying for my Part I job post undergraduate degree.
I won’t mention the great array of museums, galleries and exhibitions, opera visits and the sheer quantity of architecture that I get to visit and see in London as the list is endless. Since leaving Carre’s, I have found myself with an abundance of opportunities and new networks, for which I thank my roots at the school for having equipped me with such a skillset and the confidence to make the very most of it all.
Life in the London metropolis is quite the contrast to Lincolnshire life in just about every way, and perhaps most notably in the cost of a pint, but one that I simply cannot recommend enough to anyone brave enough to make the leap.
Oliver Garland
Please click on the link below to view the short film Oliver took part in last July with ARTiculation and HENI Talks:
HENI Talks - HENI Talks x Articulation: Peter Randall-Page, 'Fructus'
or ‘HENI TALKS Peter Randall Page’ into YouTube, and it should come up. I hope that you enjoy it!
Well done Oliver - what an exciting time he is having at University.

Alumni - Will Ellis (2012 - 2019)
Will is studying at Nottingham Trent, studying for a BA in Music Performance and is currently playing bass in a band called 'Left Hand Lane'. They are gigging locally and also in Manchester and London in the coming months and have just released a single called 'Fly', which you can hear on Spotify.
He was lucky enough to have one of his tracks recorded and produced by Adrian Bushby, who previously worked with the Foo Fighters!
One of the highlights of his summer will be playing at Splendour Festival in Nottingham (Line Up | Splendour Festival 2021), sharing a stage on 24 July with Ocean Colour Scene and the Happy Mondays, amongst others. We are really looking forward to seeing him!
On a personal note, I'd really like to thank you for encouraging Will with his music at school. You gave him his first taste of performing in public when he and his band, Unknown Element, played in the school hall many years ago. Although he was quite able in many ways, music has been the one thing to 'light his candle' and I'm grateful to you for nurturing his interest.
Article written by Mrs Bullement with thanks to Mrs Quinton and Mrs Karamuzondo in the Music Department.
Well done Will - see you at Splendour 2022
